CAMPFIRE STORIES & VISITATIONS
#1: Red Cloud's Ghost
An experiment for projecting the image of selected
historical persons, whose presence haunts the American
landscape, onto the smoke of campfires.
The image is projected onto the smoke which animates the image.
The thicker the smoke the more vivid the image, and as the smoke
moves about the image appears and disappears.
The image shown here is of Red Cloud, the Oglala
leader who led his people in a successful war against
the United States before deciding that any further conflict
would be futile and devastating to his tribe. As a result
he lead his people onto the reservation. Other leaders
such as Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse accused him of
cowardice but, in the end, their own
efforts only confirmed Red Cloud's fears.
The are other projections planned.
A video "sketch" has also been made.
Below: various fire pits photographed during travels.
