Business as usual

The shoe repair shop is now a bagel place,
but the city looks largely the same,
swarmed with commuters and tourists.

There is scaffolding everywhere
and new pushy saleswomen in stores.

I walk through a wall of jackhammer noise,
and a construction worker watches me,
sipping his coffee.

On 7th Avenue,
I catch a whiff of pot and piss.

I'm inside the machine again.
